CATS Cambridge Students Shine in the 2026 UKMT International Intermediate Maths Challenge

A celebration of academic excellence, global competitiveness, and the strength of our Mathematics Department

CATS Cambridge is delighted to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our Year 10 and Year 11 students in the 2026 UKMT International Intermediate Maths Challenge, held on campus this January. Thirty ambitious students took part in this highly respected global competition, renowned for stretching learners through complex, non‑routine problem‑solving tasks delivered in a rigorous 60‑minute, 25‑question assessment.

The event was expertly coordinated by Ms Sujata Khirade, UKMT Maths Coordinator, whose leadership and dedication to student success were instrumental in this year’s results. Exceptional support was provided by Ms Amna Fife (House Director – Trinity Bridge) and Ms Olga Sobiesiak (Examinations Manager), ensuring a smooth, inspiring, and academically enriching experience for every participant. We have also proudly celebrated their success through whole‑school assemblies, recognising their achievements and inspiring the wider student body.

This year’s results marked one of the strongest performances for CATS Cambridge, with over 64% of participating students earning a certificate a remarkable testament to the depth of mathematical talent within our community.

Summary of Achievements:

5 Gold Certificates
10 Silver Certificates
4 Bronze Certificates

11 Participation Certificates

These results highlight the academic strength and determination of our students, who consistently demonstrate resilience, curiosity, and a passion for tackling advanced mathematical challenges.

A special congratulations goes to Siqi, who achieved the Best in School award for the highest overall score among all CATS entrants.

We are also proud to announce that three students; Siqi, Junhong, and Yun qualified for the prestigious Grey and Pink Kangaroo follow‑on rounds, placing them among the top mathematical performers across the UK.

Success in international competitions like UKMT is a powerful indicator of academic potential and prepares students for competitive pathways, including: Top UK universities and Russell Group institutions, STEM‑focused degrees such as Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science, and Economics, Academic scholarships and advanced study opportunities

These results reinforce CATS Cambridge’s commitment to providing a high‑performance maths environment, combining expert teaching, personalised support, and opportunities that encourage students to excel on a global stage.

We extend our congratulations to all participants, our Mathematics Department for their ongoing commitment, and the wider CATS Cambridge community for fostering a culture where ambition, excellence, and academic curiosity thrive.

CATS Cambridge continues to invest in opportunities that help students stand out both in the UK and internationally and this year’s UKMT results serve as a powerful example of the exceptional progress our learners are making.
