Students at CATS Cambridge recently gained valuable insight into what it takes to apply to one of the world’s leading universities during a dedicated session led by Emily, Regional Manager (Europe) from the Cambridge Admissions Office.
Emily has also previously attended the CATS Cambridge University Fair, where she met with students to discuss their university ambitions and offer personalised guidance helping to strengthen the connection between students and the admissions process.
The session welcomed 26 students, including primarily AL1 gifted and talented students, alongside Pre-A Level and GCSE learners. It provided a valuable opportunity for students at different stages of their academic journey to better understand the pathway to the University of Cambridge.
Understanding the Cambridge Application Process
During the session, Emily introduced students to Cambridge’s unique college system and explained how the application process differs from other UK universities. Students explored the academic expectations for entry, the role of admissions assessments for certain courses, and the earlier application timeline required when applying to Oxbridge institutions.
Sessions like this are essential in helping students navigate competitive applications with confidence, encouraging them to start thinking early about their academic goals and how to build a strong profile.
Inspiring Future Oxbridge Applicants
For many attendees, the talk helped transform the idea of applying to University of Oxford or Cambridge into a realistic and achievable goal.
By gaining a clearer understanding of the process and expectations, students were able to see how their current studies, subject interests, and independent learning can shape future applications. Many left the session feeling motivated and more confident about aiming high.

The Q&A session sparked a range of insightful questions from students keen to better understand the application process.
One student asked whether Cambridge accepts international qualifications equivalent to GCSEs. Emily explained that the university recognises diverse academic backgrounds and accepts a wide range of recognised international qualifications.
Students interested in Engineering also asked about submitting portfolios. While portfolios are not part of the main application, applicants can highlight independent projects and subject exploration in the additional My Cambridge Application form—an important opportunity to showcase curiosity and initiative.
