From Cooperation to Competition: Students tackle global challenges at CATS Cambridge MUN Conference

Recently, CATS Cambridge hosted a Model United Nations (MUN) Conference titled “From Cooperation to Competition: Navigating Global Challenges in an Era of National Self-Interest.” The event brought together students from Bosworth Independent School, MPW, St Andrew’s College Cambridge, and CATS Cambridge for a day of thoughtful debate and collaboration.

The conference provided students with the opportunity to engage with some of the most pressing issues facing the world today. Through a series of committee sessions, delegates explored complex topics such as “Climate Action vs. National Interest: Can Global Cooperation Survive in a Fragmented World?” and “Human Rights in the Age of Climate Crisis: Protecting Climate Refugees and Displaced Communities.”

Representing countries from around the world, students took on the role of diplomats, developing key skills in negotiation, public speaking, and critical thinking. Each committee created a space for delegates to share perspectives, challenge ideas, and work towards balanced and realistic solutions.

The conference featured five committees in total, each demonstrating the confidence, preparation, and enthusiasm of the participants. The General Assembly Committee, chaired by student Karina, was later joined by delegates representing UNESCO, adding further depth to the discussions.

Reflecting on the experience, Karina shared:

“The MUN conference was very eventful and inspiring. I was the chair of the General Assembly Committee, which was later joined by participants from UNESCO. CATS Cambridge prepared very well for this day and warmly welcomed all the guests. There were five committees in total, and in each of them students demonstrated their talents, confidence, and debating skills. I would like to thank the school for the opportunity to take part in this project, where students can express their interest in global issues and develop their confidence.”

The day concluded with an awards ceremony in the lecture theatre, recognising the contributions of delegates, followed by a group photo bringing together all participants.

Events such as the MUN Conference play an important role in supporting students to develop a deeper understanding of global issues, while building the confidence and communication skills needed to engage with them. By encouraging collaboration, open discussion, and critical thinking, the conference reflects CATS Cambridge’s commitment to preparing students for an increasingly interconnected world.
